Pr. Geo.’s officials try to calm residents over Potomac High tuberculosis case

Prince George’s County school and health officials on Thursday sought to calm residents and dispel rumors about a tuberculosis case that was recently reported at Potomac High School.

Angela M. Wakhweya, the chief of health policy for the Prince George’s County school system, said at a news conference that no new diagnosis of active TB has been made since school officials reported earlier this week than an individual at the school was infected.

Wakhweya said her concern is for the person who she said is continuing to receive treatment and is no longer infectious. She said the person was diagnosed a few weeks ago.

The school system reported the case on Monday. It is not releasing any details about the infected person. “We don’t want this person to be stigmatized,” Wakhweya said.

Citing confidentiality, Wakhweya would not say if the person who was infected is a student or school employee. She also would not say if the person has returned to the school.

 Wakhweya said tuberculosis is not like the flu or a cold, which survives on objects like a doorknob. TB is spread from person to person through the air, she said. To contract the disease, a person would have to be in close, prolonged contact with an infected individual.

Tuberculosis case reported at PGCPS high school.

A person has been diagnosed with tuberculosis at a Prince George’s County high school, according to school district officials.

Lynn McCawley, a spokeswoman for the county school system, said the infected individual is at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill. She said she did not know whether the person is a student or a member of the school staff. She also said she did not know when the person contracted the infection.

“To ensure the health and safety of students and staff, Prince George’s County Public School health services staff are working closely with Prince George’s County Health Department staff to conduct contact tracing that identifies those who may have had close contact with the individual,” McCawley said in a statement.

She said no additional cases have been identified through contact tracing.

In the past several months, the Prince George’s County school system undertook a massive effort to try to ensure that all of its students received their required immunizations.

About 400 students did not get their vaccines, and earlier this month their parents were notified that the children would be barred from school.
McCawley said she did not know whether the tuberculosis case is connected in any way to the students who did not receive vaccines.

Pr. George’s school on lockdown after nearby shooting

Prince George’s County authorities placed Potomac High School on lockdown for about an hour and a half Wednesday morning as police responded to a call for a shooting nearby in Oxon Hill.

At about 9:15 a.m., a woman called 911 reporting that two men, one with a gun, confronted her, said Officer Harry Bond, a spokesman with the Prince George’s County police department.
