County Council Members sent more than $5M in government grants to a “Foundation” in Washington DC – corruption Scheme.

Based on credible information received from Prince George’s County Candidate for at large seat Mr. Julian Lopez, Council woman Karen Toles and County council member Mel Franklin gave away $400,000 meant for Prince George’s County to a “Foundation” in Washington DC. At this point it is not clear why they chose to have the money wired to a  foundation in another state (Washington DC), however, corruption in Prince George’s County never ceases to amaze.

Once you dig through the files, you’ll notice that only one council member does not give to this foundation, Council member Lehman. I asked her directly and she said she doesn’t know why others would send their whole or nearly all of the $100k yearly grant funds. Each council member is allotted that much a year for PG non profit org, ” stated Mr. Lopez.

Prince George’s County Budget provides $100,000 in grant funds for each Council Member to designate and allocate to local County non-profit service organizations (501(c)(3) charities). These grants, which are referred to as Special Appropriation Grants are dispersed throughout the fiscal year and are part of the Council’s continuing priority partnership with non-profit organizations that help support a wide range of vital programs and services to the County’s citizens and communities. The money is supposed to be used locally to assist the local communities.

As soon as this blog receives the entire file, we will share our findings with the public in the next few days to highlight the issue for proper engagement. This years election is very critical and the Prince George’s County Citizenry needs to stay engaged with the local issues pending a primary election in June 2018.

Council member Mel Franklin and Council woman Karen Toles, who are term-limited, helped create at large council seats and then are running for the same seats which they enacted through legislation. By making plans to stay in the county council, it might be a conflict of interest instead of giving a chance to someone else to innovate the county.

Leaders with highest ethical standards and public servant-ship needs to be elected for the new seats during election 2018. The shepherding of public resources must stay a priority to everyone in the county and should go beyond the 2018 election cycle until the county stabilizes with new leadership.

Commitment to the fight against public corruption must go on. Every dollar that a corrupt official or a corrupt business person puts in their pocket is a dollar stolen from a pregnant woman who needs health care; or from a girl or a boy who deserves an education; or from communities that need water, roads, and schools. Every dollar is critical if we are to reach our goals to end extreme poverty by 2030 and to boost shared prosperity.

In another development, Mr. Lopez has also recently reported that,  PG County Office of Community Relations has a budget of $4.3m. $4.2m goes to employee compensation. Actual grants to community: $45,300 or about 1%

More to come.
